This summer when I was home so many people mentioned my blog and were disappointed that I hadn't continued to post my story. Even my daughter said I had better start again!<br />
So here we go...<br />
We finished our ten months in Lutsel K'e. We met so many great people and I really loved (and miss) the students. But it is such a sad and sort of hopeless place that we just couldn't face another year. <br />
In May I applied for and was offered the job of Instructional Coach at Harry Camsell School in Hay River. <br />
I will end this post and shall once again post regularly in the coming days and into 2015.<br />

We knew that a net was set between two holes. We just didn't know how they got the net under the ice between the holes. When we asked the local people they would start to explain and then say, "we will have to show you".<br />It is simple but it is too complicated to explain. On Friday the high school students set a net under the guidance of Herman and James. David and I were invited to come along and watch (and learn).<br />This is the goal,<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5954873160755739970'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-QlmPIPojJ7w/UqP1luVafUI/AAAAAAAAAxU/IZmFA9-RTRo/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br />So I will try to explain through pictures and videos and diagrams. We were out on the ice for two and a half hours and nine high school students helped out and learned as well. James and Herman are seasoned fisherman and patient teachers.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5954873204318281858'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vFtw_QIphWY/UqP1oQniIII/AAAAAAAAAxc/6muy4PVoX0g/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br />We all trooped out onto the lake. Herman wanted to set the net about a quarter of a mile out.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5954873259076962178'><img src='https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8_ytwrJm7i0/UqP1rcnBR4I/AAAAAAAAAxk/5wcvmQ6rWNE/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br />This is James and David. James is a teacher at the school. He is a fisherman and he also is a trapper.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5954873302804847410'><img src='https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-yR3_2luLhnY/UqP1t_gj2zI/AAAAAAAAAxs/WpBrnWMyjyc/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br />We chopped and chiseled a hole in the ice. The ice was about 6-8 inches thick in most places. Herman told us to spread out. That didn't make me nervous at all! <br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5954873351541197730'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-tCSGsKSyNxY/UqP1w1ENi6I/AAAAAAAAAx0/1hgk2azOCKE/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br /><br />We pushed a 15 foot pole under the ice and then pushed it with a stick. It had a long rope attached to it. We then looked through the ice to see where it was. It was easier than it sounds. At that point we chiseled and chopped through the ice again.<br /><br /><p align='center'><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/UtEBluqN-sM" width="400" height="300"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UtEBluqN-sM" /><param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><!-- Fallback content --><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtEBluqN-sM"><img src="http://img.youtube.com/vi/UtEBluqN-sM/0.jpg" width="400" height="300" />YouTube Video</a></object></p>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqE_zC7eya8<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5954873410225878402'><img src='https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-i_Qb797fHZY/UqP10PrutYI/AAAAAAAAAx8/-eYa73bfxcI/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br />These are Herman's mitts. They are older than him and he is older than me!<br /><br />Once we pushed the pole along hole by hole we were ready to set the net. We put holes in the ice about every 20 to 25 feet. I keep saying "we" but really the kids and Herman did most of the work.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5954873451965202770'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-wDVWm6Xhiqk/UqP12rLKQVI/AAAAAAAAAyE/_P0_AiDWLeY/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5954873503080388802'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-9NWEe6TpUMg/UqP15pl-GMI/AAAAAAAAAyM/Z8pGFr7Va3Q/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5954873551401767154'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-YixtCHsliuU/UqP18dmr0PI/AAAAAAAAAyU/PtfLoSPJC2M/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5954873597447475346'><img src='https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-qV31JjKLG-A/UqP1_JI1kJI/AAAAAAAAAyc/LObXRF8vfGo/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br />The nets were tied at the first hole and the last. I have taken these pictures over the last few weeks. I will start at our house and take you straight into the community and then back up over the hill.<br />This our house as we leave the driveway.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5952555287719350706'><img src='https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Jk3Tzb1W3RU/Upu5fwZikbI/AAAAAAAAAsM/MPEcmT3mucc/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' align='left' style='margin:5px'></a><br /><br />Now we are heading down the road to LK. It is about a 10-12 minute walk to the end of the peninsula.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5952555333147814546'><img src='https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-fCYnzN7Sd1A/Upu5iZoh6pI/AAAAAAAAAsU/y6_nZJqa3Q4/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' align='right' style='margin:5px'></a><br /><br />Here some of the houses we go past. Many of them are empty. Many of them are damaged. Some of the houses here are owned by the band and many are owned by GNWT housing. Because the GNWT Housing homes are expensive and require an acceptable credit rating, they are empty.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5952555377907180898'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Kr3EZCnwj_w/Upu5lAX_pWI/AAAAAAAAAsc/HccsUmXKCe8/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' align='right' style='margin:5px'></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5952555429449939842'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-FlW4LmUd88I/Upu5oAYvu4I/AAAAAAAAAsk/ua6NRoTtiNU/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' align='left' style='margin:5px'></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5952555478289304434'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-HYBTM_RNCbc/Upu5q2U9S3I/AAAAAAAAAss/07AJU0laThI/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' align='right' style='margin:5px'></a><br /><br />The following houses are occupied by families.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5952555522549636082'><img src='https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-R-27LYKb4ac/Upu5tbNcW_I/AAAAAAAAAs0/9wO0zqNkZXQ/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' align='left' style='margin:5px'></a><br /><br />This is the chief's house<br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5952555564597193058'><img src='https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-NPqK4OaqoQc/Upu5v32XKWI/AAAAAAAAAs8/ydbl_XZpmtM/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5952555611637038786'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-6OOldVAPs6I/Upu5ynFiPsI/AAAAAAAAAtE/jrlClFJpfjE/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' align='left' style='margin:5px'></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5952555658074991746'><img src='https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-3QYPL3g5vAQ/Upu51UFNLII/AAAAAAAAAtM/BhvaYOoNVaY/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br />This one is really fun. I have mentioned before that a woman named Hanna, originally from Germany, is the teacher but she invites the elders of the community to come and share their expertise. Sometimes there are just 4 or 5 of us but last evening there were seventeen people present. Many of them were older, experienced beaders and sewers. When I say sewers, I mean hand sewing with animal hide. The band supplies the beads, the thread, the snacks (last night it was chocolate covered digestive cookies, yum yum), the beading looms and a MOOSE HIDE!!! My pictures for this post are from last night.<br /><br /><br /><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5944086578775348466'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Ffy6IWItC4s/Un2jQBISVPI/AAAAAAAAAoU/W4uUmd3p-cM/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='210' height='281' align='left' style='margin:5px'></a><br />This is Madeline, she does amazing work. She sell her mitts for 400 dollars.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5944086620975415570'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-cOkASRP4NXo/Un2jSeVkQRI/AAAAAAAAAoc/dx4EGUDJbgM/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />She was the oldest woman there. In my mind's eye I could visualize the rocks jutting out and I also remembering thinking I'd like it. <br />
Back in 1999, David spent 4 months in Haliburton, Ontario and when I visited him, I finally got to see the Canadian Shield. Now we are in the NWT and we are living on the rocks of the shield. And what a wondrous sight it is. We have taken so many pictures and so this blog post is my opportunity to share some of them with you. <br />

Harvest? In the NWT? I know some of you are thinking this because I have been asked too many times if it is dark all the time yet!). It is light at 8am and dark by 7:30pm. Pretty much just like home.<br />When we were in Yellowknife at the end of August I was really impressed with the flowers. Remember, there is lots of sunlight in the summer! Here is an example of some the annual flowers we saw.<br /><br /><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5934436019259798162'><img src='https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ek8u9V9AdJw/UltaHhZDcpI/AAAAAAAAAkQ/1KBzWIzvQ_A/s288/1381716994.065354.jpg' border='0' width='210' height='281' align='left' style='margin:5px'></a><br />Our friend, Edwouard, has a vegetable garden here in LK. His garden is about 15 feet by 40 feet and he had an amazing harvest of turnips, potatoes, lettuce, beets, and carrots. He has enough to use all winter and lots to share!<br /><br />But really this blog post is about my harvest. I was not sure how hard it would be to get salad greens and fresh vegetables. I came prepared to grow sprouts and shoots to supplement our salads. Interestingly, so far, there is always romaine lettuce available. (It is expensive but it is always in the coop store.)<br /><br />So here is my harvest:<br /><br />These are pea shoots, ready to harvest. (After 7 days)<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5934436125062085042'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-VWNohVEZZQY/UltaNriSObI/AAAAAAAAAkY/mjAp2Rc8ggs/s288/1381717506.775105.jpg' border='0' width='640' height='640' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Here they are harvested. You just cut them close to the seeds. <br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5934436205787891138'><img src='https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-L5NvQ66Zzys/UltaSYQ0RcI/AAAAAAAAAkg/cN0Ez3M7dxk/s288/1381717509.280438.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />This is what they looked like after two days. (I know, these pictures are not in a good order, this one should have been first.)<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5934436286863719538'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MG0mYlXSOw0/UltaXGSzPHI/AAAAAAAAAko/HWAqjK6SX4s/s288/1381717517.297498.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />These are my sunflower shoots.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5934436356896315794'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yEao5L9Q_yw/UltabLL32ZI/AAAAAAAAAkw/n_VoAK46pYM/s288/1381717525.833765.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5934436431299902338'><img src='https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Erm9-tsGeqU/UltafgXEe4I/AAAAAAAAAk4/Qrv7lNuiv4E/s288/1381717528.014074.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />These shoots are delicious and really healthy too. I have also been growing an assortment of sprouts. I use the Mumm seeds and I am growing both the shoots and the sprouts in sprouting trays, also available at Mumms. You can check out their site at <br />http://sprouting.com<br />That's my harvest. Happy Thanksgiving.<br /><br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02512139307399686801noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3725056465765474733.post-15327236954225711462013-10-06T13:54:00.001-07:002013-10-06T13:54:42.526-07:00Flora of LKDavid and I have been tramping all over the ridges of Lutsel K'e. We are about 8-10 minutes from the school. In the other house we were 5 minutes from the school. The comment the local people make is, 'you live way out there?'.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5926995184382491442'><img src='https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-D1JrlpcnkEQ/UkDqt7aRuzI/AAAAAAAAAb0/EAf1iNynDXs/s288/1379984841.280167.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />This is the back of the house. As you can see from pictures it looks like we live on the second level and actually , we do. The house is built above the ground, you could actually crawl under it. Beneath our floor is a crawl space that is completely insulated. The water tank (which is filled as needed) and the sewage tank (which is emptied 3 times a week) is housed in this space.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5926995247546517458'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-U3UIzQDN2HI/UkDqxmtwR9I/AAAAAAAAAb8/Ltx3cjY_AIk/s288/1379984847.083331.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />This is the kitchen and on the coach is the chief cook and bottle washer. All schools in the NWT have two of these days each year. Cultural events are to be planned for the staff by the principal and the Aboriginal teachers in each school. It was an interesting week and I am glad to have my first week completed. Here is the school:<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5921276436185901202'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-HxWlFEZRT8E/UiyZi-PAaJI/AAAAAAAAAYA/lVFl8QqBOnU/s288/1378653053.754570.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />As you can see it is made of logs. There are six classrooms. The playground looks out of the lake.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5921276558404705442'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-JSCSWrtriCQ/UiyZqFiPXKI/AAAAAAAAAYI/qfvROKqmhBI/s288/1378653055.087490.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />This is my Literary Room. It was a classroom but is now just used to store the literary resources. The resources here are amazing. Any resource you can think of is stored in that room. <br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5921276630115152770'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jkI6rJ6LOB4/UiyZuQrV84I/AAAAAAAAAYQ/7TCA8v0Gxf0/s288/1378653056.200486.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />I teach English Language Arts to the grade 8-10 class. There are 16 students on my list. Ten showed up the first day, eleven the next, twelve the next and only eight were there on Friday. I knew that attendance was an issue but I was surprised that it would be the first week.<br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5921276714269187986'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-10TJaUp1ApM/UiyZzKLOn5I/AAAAAAAAAYY/mrV87YGpvPo/s288/1378653657.819847.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />On Friday we had a Smoke Ceremony to begin the year. The tall guy in the picture spoke and said a prayer. He and some of the boys drummed through the ceremony.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5921276799348429394'><img src='https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-zCCEWzH8I3Y/UiyZ4HHs0lI/AAAAAAAAAYg/UiRhI_bWLyM/s288/1378653659.913418.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Everyone was given some tobacco to place in the fire.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5921276902525275138'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RB8NfPuBTy4/UiyZ-He-jAI/AAAAAAAAAYo/Hs-txsPBBxk/s288/1378653663.526485.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Then we went around the circle and placed the tobacco in the fire.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5921277036102195826'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Cx_k9iP3TMI/UiyaF5GMmnI/AAAAAAAAAYw/-wsGXlfZWlg/s288/1378653669.296763.jpg' border='0' width='210' height='281' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Food was also placed as an offering in the fire by an Elder and one of the students.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5921277122704992594'><img src='https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-XE4s01PAyC8/UiyaK7t6aVI/AAAAAAAAAY4/dCnDxqhUAW8/s288/1378653670.654745.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />When that was all done we all ate. There are so many empty houses that we may move closer to the water. <br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5915853744627015778'><img src='https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-m_OaVYpMMyg/UhlVox-oYGI/AAAAAAAAAVU/Yn0sGG0SBf4/s288/1377391228.606898.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />This morning we climbed up to the ridge of rock that over looks the community. The Coop store owner says that there only about 260 people here and we expected 360.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5915853833308925138'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xXjaayhhg_M/UhlVt8WC7NI/AAAAAAAAAVc/PkvXTLey1wM/s288/1377391229.857162.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />More pictures from the rock.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5915853911398821394'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TKIckorqtXg/UhlVyfQILhI/AAAAAAAAAVk/utp4gmBrfgw/s288/1377391240.736342.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />The plants are really different. It was a lovely walk and we loved the way the grass and trees want to grow in the rock.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5915142920090380978'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-by-qvJtUxzA/UhbPJWOnarI/AAAAAAAAAUA/fGsIeOCO3qE/s288/1377225494.129520.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />It was about a 40 minute walk to the Legislature. It is shaped like an igloo.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5915142948227282626'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-4Lna3z7lwMc/UhbPK_C-dsI/AAAAAAAAAUI/3uI8ybBKtY4/s288/1377225498.417810.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />The works of art we saw today were amazing.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5915142983310176994'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-16vKv6KzzKc/UhbPNBvY8uI/AAAAAAAAAUQ/6XdYJDufQjE/s288/1377225511.465556.jpg' border='0' width='210' height='281' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />This caribou is carved from a single vertebra of a bowhead whale.<br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5915143011681844930'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_hSniXJXoMI/UhbPOrbuPsI/AAAAAAAAAUY/zlFZ9W-CReE/s288/1377225515.435729.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Each block on this community quilt represents a family from its community. I have decided to continue my teaching in NWT. In May, I accepted a job in the community of Lutsel K'e, a 40 minute plane ride from Yellowknife. So this is my new adventure.<br />We arrived yesterday and we were greeted by this beauty,<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5914404847548444386"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-RuN07d9XFqI/UhQv33v5LuI/AAAAAAAAARw/3TSyNTft-7A/s400/1377054129.698008.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="400" /></a><br />We had supper at the Wild Cat Cafe and this plane landed as we ate,<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5914404871034189730"><img border="0" height="210" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-MrADLxDaRk8/UhQv5PPVN6I/AAAAAAAAAR4/LfPiLo2Van8/s288/1377054139.324630.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="281" /></a><br />Yellowknife and the rest of the NWT are built on the Canadian Shield, which I learned about in grade 5. I remember thinking that it just sounded like rock and it is just ROCK and it is beautiful.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5914404899510476690"><img border="0" height="210" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-RacetLFPk7I/UhQv65Um35I/AAAAAAAAASA/6k7NiPhIjMg/s288/1377054239.960648.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="281" /></a><br />So here I am heading to downtown YK along the Frame trail beside Frame Lake.<br /><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/118032337974205490359/FarNorth02#5914404929603399602"><img border="0" height="210" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-R2ywqmgs3aQ/UhQv8pbUb7I/AAAAAAAAASI/0pyZ4YwrWyw/s288/1377054241.140938.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="281" /></a><br />And here is David. Three projects really caught my eye. We attended all the quilt exhibits and the FAN (Fibre Arts Network) exhibit of quilts entitled, "From Away", was very interesting and I loved, Stone Stories, by Marianne Parsons.<br />

How many of us have hauled out a dandelion and thought, "Look at that root!" ? Ode to the dandelion! Thank you, Regina, for appreciating that weed. I will never look at the dandelion the same way after seeing this homage.<br />
Last, but not least, was Curtains, by Karen Miller. This work of art took my breath away. <br />

Karen had quite a few pieces in a variety of shows but this gem from Newfoundland was beautiful. From the clapbords, to the grasses, it was an extradinary piece of work. These are the wild flowers in the front of the abandoned house. I loved all of Karen Miller's quilts.<br />

I found a great tutorial for making chicken pin cushions. I had seen the pattern ages ago and I have wanted to make one so I gave it a try. I think they turned out pretty cute. Here is where to find the tutorial, <a href="http://quiltscapesquilting.blogspot.ca/p/hen-party-chick-pincushion.html">http://quiltscapesquilting.blogspot.ca/p/hen-party-chick-pincushion.html</a><br />

My sister found a sock creature book on the Hampstead House website. <a href="http://www.hampsteadhousebooks.com/">http://www.hampsteadhousebooks.com/</a> It is a hilarious book with great pictures and all kinds of terrific ideas for sock animals. Daniel, the author, has a great sense of humour and a very strange imagination.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is Cape Enrage, NB and it is a beautiful place. The cliffs and the ocean are magnificent. What a fun place! Here is my twin and me last Friday. This was a wellness opportunity for the two of us. We enjoyed the chance to zip-line and to take part in the obstacle course. Here we are getting ready to ZIP.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWh3w_s-4ZyaIWNHrovxRKhsY4KfJB7ZA9MzICV8YCCyZnwEfkyAGH6POZ9sA6M09-tfYyOEIsHzxPR_z6qGQlv3caLHl0F7urHaEauTyfZzh92mqFj3DDzQKA9YCTTIOWEBg7bIpiuVU/s1600/Cape+Enrage+012+blog.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWh3w_s-4ZyaIWNHrovxRKhsY4KfJB7ZA9MzICV8YCCyZnwEfkyAGH6POZ9sA6M09-tfYyOEIsHzxPR_z6qGQlv3caLHl0F7urHaEauTyfZzh92mqFj3DDzQKA9YCTTIOWEBg7bIpiuVU/s640/Cape+Enrage+012+blog.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And this is me zipping:</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Jay, my twin sister, was able to capture it on video.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was exciting (but not as fun as zipping across Grand Falls in New Brunswick!!)</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
then we all challenged ourselves on the Cape Enrage obstacle course. I did not make it through the ropes challenge but my twin had a go and she was more successful than me. Here she is trying her luck (and strength)</div>

This coming fall our quilting group is having a quilt show and we always have a challenge project for our members. This year's challenge was to select an empty box out of a bag and use that box to inspire us to complete a project. The only rule was that you could only use the colours that were on the box. You will notice in the photo that my box selection was the tissue box. My project is the one on the right. I used fake flowers and I had to dye the centre of one black and the red flower is painted as well. The project on the left is my friend, Melanie's, tea cozy. She had the same box as me. She made her flowers and if you look closely you will see that at the very top of her tea cozy is a white piece of fabric that she says represents the kleenex. Some of the projects that our quilting group have designed have been really neat and very original.<br />
<br />
I have recently created a blog for our quilting group, the Keswick Ridge Quilters. On this blog you will see information on the activities our group has been involved in and samples from the Show and Tell portion of our monthly meetings. There are also some more completed Box Top challenge projects to view as well.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I have been unfaithful to my blog these last few weeks. I have been working on another blog for the quilting group that I am a member of. But now I do have a few things to share... Like this great bottle gourd. Last evening our gardening group got together and painted gourds. Marilyn, one of our members, grew these gourds a few years ago. She dried them and then was willing to share them with us. It is a challenge growing gourds, the conditions have to be just right! This summer all the members of our gardening group are going to try to grow them so that we have more to paint and share. My gourd is hanging above our deck that overlooks the Keswick River. I can't imagine that a bird would want to live in my gourd, but what a great view if it chose to live here!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I don't mean the daffodils and tulips, I mean that you can can see so much of the past. When I walk to school everyday I walk past where the old saw mill used to be.
